<big>Regulus was not built for travel. He was not made to sustain sudden change, nor was he prepared for making his own way through life.</big>

<big>Since he was a youngling, he knew what his life purpose was. Serve at his mother's side. Protect the city and its knowledge. Teach the other younglings and take care of his little sister. His duties were laid out in front of him before he knew anything else. And he followed what he was taught. He was good with children. Patient and kind, stern when needed.</big>

<big>That was a long time ago.</big>



<big>His hands moved swiftly. One after another, his clothes were packed into a small case, books and texts hidden away in pockets, or wherever they would fit. And most importantly, his favorite. His first.</big>

<big>''"Are you really leaving?"''</big>

<big>Remy stood outside of his room, hand barely hovering next to the door frame. Only when Regulus looked up, did she step inside.</big>


<big>''"I am, yes."''</big>


<big>He offered her but a simple glance. Acknowledgement of her presence rather than any form of reassurance or kindness. His hands reached for the suitcase, closing it and locking it shut.</big>

<big>''"This is... my one chance to get away. The gateways have grown unstable. The next time they open may be a century away, and I would never know."''</big>


<big>He took in a breath, swallowing hard before finally looking up at her. She looked worried.</big>

<big>''"I... cannot risk this. If I do not leave now, I might never get my chance again."''</big>





<big>Remy was a good listener.</big>

<big>Since they were children, the two always stuck around one another. She was a rather quiet child. Instead of playing with the other younglings, she would occupy herself with carving out strange scripts and drawings onto the earth. If the two weren't together, then should be somewhere outside, stone in hand and hard at work, decorating the walls of their house. Regulus' room was empty before. Flat walls. Small windows.</big>

<big>When the outside world became too much, she started carving pictures into the walls on the inside. Her room was filled with all kinds of patterns. Copies of poems and religious scriptures accompanied by ornate carvings of star constellations, flowers and chorus fruit trees. Soon enough, Regulus' room was similarly altered.</big>

<big>And while she carved her patterns into his walls, he would recite his books to her. They would do this exchange for hours on end every day for about 30 years. Everyday he held a new book in hand, and a new story for her. And every day, she would leave her fingerprints etched into the wall.</big>





<big>She listened now too. Let him ramble, explain himself when he had no need for it. Her brows furrowed, a small, pained smile tugging at her lips. She moved past the door, and towards him, wrapping her arms around him, pulling Regulus into a tight hug.</big>


<big>''"The Overworld is dangerous."''</big>


<big>He let his arms wrap around her too, careful and gentle.</big>

<big>''"I know. But... at least they are free."''</big>


<big>Regulus felt her tremble, clinging onto him as she let out a quiet sob. There was a twisted feeling in his gut. Shame and guilt, one he could not get rid of.</big>


<big>''"Will I ever see you again?..."''</big>
