I pray.

I worship.

I go through the motions.

The god of war is not sacred to me, but I play my part to stay safe.

During sunset I stand on a roof gazing over the walls of the fort towards the dunes. There it is, hidden amongst the burial mount, the temple of Matanuh. I should offer up flesh soon.

Feeling the jerk of a fall, I flinch trying to avoid slipping off the roof.

I did not fall, there was nothing to fall from either. Upon opening my eyes again, it is still dark. Fumbling around on the piece of rotting wood beneath me I notice how grubby and worn my tunic is. A distant groan of despair somewhere.

This is not Baylara, I am not even in the desert, and I have not been in a long time.
