He read the declaration again, and the ideas became more enticing: a chain of fortified outports across the eastern islands under the vassalage of Istrania.

As his eyes reached the part about wanting huscarls to serve as guides. “An easy way to get rid of those who fail their duty” Valdemar thought with fury, as he had not forgotten that Percival had been allowed to land on Istramark without anyone knowing. It was by dumb luck or the divine intervention of the Godking that Percival was just an explorer and not a conqueror. Huscarls had paid for it and had seen several of their number being purged, put into prison for failing their oath to the Godking, yet it was expensive to keep them there. Maybe they could find redemption for their sin in the east.

Valdemar leaned back in his chair. This was just not a dumping ground, but an eye into an area that Istrania had known too little about for too long. Ever with his own past on the sea, he saw the east as a dangerous place, something that this Vanguard could help tame a bit. Then Valdemar smiled at the last bit. Fealty to the Godking, another frontier of Faithfuls, oh how this would help make the sogn easier to deal with, even if the traditionalists would throw a fit about the exceptions to the caste system that were asked.Then he reached the final words. “The Order will know only War.”

There was almost something beautiful about it. A people who had lost everything but still fought on, no matter how bleak it was. It reminded him of the tales about the first years after the Godking was forced on his throne, the struggles that were overcome due to the faith and loyalty for the Godking. Maybe this was the same; maybe those people would find a cause in the Godking as well.
