New page

{{News Header|Type=Character News|Subheading=The Study of the Unknown|RealDate=2026-09-19|Author=Percival van der Berg}}

Several months have passed since we began examining the strange black material. Despite our efforts, we have learned remarkably little about its purpose. Its unusual durability has proven difficult to explain, and each experiment seems to leave us with more questions than answers.

“Let us try something different today.”

My helpers and I continued testing the obsidian, heating it, grinding it, and exposing it to various substances. We examined its surface under magnification and compared it with other stones in our collection. Some samples fractured under sufficient force, while others remained stubbornly intact. Yet none of our findings explained why this material had been used to construct the strange portal I had documented.

By the afternoon, our workbench was scattered with notes and discarded fragments. I could tell my associates were growing tired of the repeated failures, though I remained determined to find something of significance.

Eventually, we arranged several pieces into a frame resembling the ruined portal from my journal. We adjusted the blocks, checked their placement, and waited, hoping that recreating its shape might reveal something we had overlooked.

Nothing happened.

I leaned back, studying our reconstruction. Perhaps the material alone was not enough. Perhaps there were other components, or some principle behind the structure that we had yet to discover.

I recalled Semet's reaction when she had encountered the obsidian. Her fear had been unmistakable, though she had offered little explanation. I wondered what she knew, and whether it might help me understand what I had found.

“Perhaps we are asking the wrong questions.”

I retrieved my journal and studied the sketches of the ruined structure once more. The arrangement of the blocks was clear, but my notes contained little that could explain its purpose. I had spent days studying the stone itself, yet perhaps the answers lay in the structure it had formed.

“For now, let us put these experiments aside. I believe it may be time to return to the site itself.”

There was still much to learn, and the ruins remained our only real lead.
