The portal’s edges rippled through the air.

Everything around it warped around the tear in space. Stars, which covered the endless Elysian sky, far out of reach of any mortal hands, looked like they were twisting and turning in the background, following the whims of this other worldly magic. If the universe had a voice, surely it would laugh at the absurdity of it all, and how this small phenomena defied the laws of the known universe. The entire thing was magnetic, drawing in anything that came close to it, urging you to touch, to feel, to enter.

It looked like it should not be.

A gap in space that rippled and churned, consuming everything in its path. A tear in space that looked like it opened up to an entirely different world. Something completely devoid of any kind of color. Black, dripping like ink, spreading and contracting as if it were breathing. It was polarizing to look at. The thing looked both natural, and completely foreign.

Had you asked him months ago, Regulus would have told you that the portal was beautiful. To witness a literal fragment of the world tear itself apart, convulse inward and zap you into an entirely new, untouched realm... It would have been exhilarating to think about. It would have been an honor and a blessing to see it in person.

But all he could think about now was how much he wanted to turn back and run away.

Regulus, much to his dismay, was a coward.

He did things by the book. Followed every rule and every command. From a young age, he was taught to keep order and balance in mind at all times. To be mindful, but not quiet. To be a guide, but not to be imposing. To be small, yet elegant. He never stepped out of line. And he was desperate for the approval of others, vowing to never be left behind. So he pushed himself in every category possible. And for a long time, that formula worked. His mother adored him. His sister was proud of him. The people of Vozuch cherished him. He was on the right path to becoming an excellent archivist. To preach the words of a God he adored, and teach others of HER songs. He followed the dreams given to him, swearing to become the voice of reason amongst the broken.

But compliance did nothing to hide the emotional wounds his mother would leave upon him.

As much as she adored him, she despised him tenfold. Just like his father. Compassionate and weak. Curious about the wrong things. Doubtful of the ancient texts. Fragile. He had grown up to be everything his mother wanted him to be, but he did not have the pleasure of being born as a creature worth her praise. So when things went out of control, when he finally reached his breaking point, he left. Left, and found himself standing before a portal he had only ever read about. Years ago he dreamt of a moment like this. To gather his courage and jump through the portal, making a new life for himself in whatever realm it took him too. But now that he was here, he looked for every reason to stay.

Remy.

That was the only reason he could think of.

Brows furrowed, he cursed under his breath, biting his lip in shame. Even if he returned now, he would only bring her trouble. Dishonor the family. Ruin her chances to become an artist like she wanted. No one would ever trust him. And so, he stepped forward.

The feeling was… strange. Like for a moment, he was swimming in silky smooth water, only to be violently spat out on the other end. Regulus groaned in pain, gripping at the ground with all his might. His body ached from the sudden fall, and his head felt like it was spinning. The moment he opened his eyes, a high pitched noise echoed behind him. Blue flames erupting into the sky and disappearing into the air just as quickly. He scrambled on the grass, staring wide eyed at the flickers of ancient magic evaporating behind him.

“Ahrgrh!”

Regulus hissed harshly, a hand immediately covering his face.

Everything was so… bright. He thought it may have been the flames and the magic that erupted such a bright light right before him but even after minutes passed, the light of the sun did not cease. His eyes hurt, vision blurring slightly from tears forming at the edges of his eyes.

“For Diana’s sake, what in the world was that…”

His eye twitched, struggling to adjust to the light.

The shulk slowly pushed himself upright, left hand hovering just above his face, the other gently tapping on the ground. He grimaced immediately, his hand cramping up.

“Eugh! W-what is this!? It’s disgusting,” he almost completely recoiled, glaring at the green plants surrounding him.

He’d… seen them before. In books and paintings. Through his studies. Never did he think that touching grass would be such an unpleasant feeling.

After a moment of pause, he slowly pushed himself off the ground, scanning the area until he found his backpack and suitcase. He threw the backpack over his shoulder, and grabbed at the case, standing still for a mere second before he… picked a direction and started walking.

‎ ‎

It took about an hour before he reached a small clearing, a huge mountain in the background looming over the field he had just entered. Although the nature of this place was entirely unfamiliar for him, it was very beautiful. And the sun, ever setting in the distance, began to shine a more comforting light upon his figure.

He still hated it, of course. No ball of flame up in the sky should emit so much light that it hurts to look at it. Which, he did of course. He stared at the sun for about ten three consecutive seconds before he started whining and cursing under his breath. It was too bright and too big. It looked absolutely ugly, and it made no sense. The light felt warm. Uncomfortably so.

“How has this realm not yet burnt to a crisp with a Devyl watching over them,” he sighed, leaning up against a tree.

He patted at his skin. It did not feel right. It was warm, and dry. And it slightly hurt. Irritated and… slightly flushed. He should have prepared for a trip like this better. Covered himself in cloths to hide away from the sun. Regulus carefully knelt to the ground, placing his suitcase in front of himself and opening it up. “Surely, there should be something I packed that would be better for this horrid weather…”

In that moment, a soft rustle echoed from behind him. In a panic, Regulus raised his hand forward, hissing in the direction of the sound.

What stepped out of the bushes was a horrible looking beast. It stood tall and confident. Slit, angry golden eyes stared at him, judging him, examining him. Giant horns covered its head, and the beast’s fur was as white as the stars. It walked towards him, echoing a loud, ear piecing battle cry…!

“Stay back, creature of the Devyl! I will not hesitate to strike you down.”

And of course, the Beast he was so afraid of, was a simple, small Sūle Starhood mountain goat.
