The intensity of combat later appealed to him, and he quickly became an effective and enthusiastic soldier. Rather than being disturbed by what he was doing, Arlo found himself drawn to the power and excitement of warfare.
During the war, Arlo also developed an interest in chemistry. He became fascinated by the ways chemicals could be used in medicine, warfare, and everyday life. Eventually, his interest in chemistry gave him a reason to pursue a new path after the war.

Arlo is intelligent, curious, ambitious, and confident. He enjoys challenges and has a natural attraction to dangerous or difficult situations.

Arlo's most unusual trait is his relationship with violence. Although he was originally forced into combat, he discovered that he enjoyed fighting and killing. He does not view his wartime experiences in the same negative way that many others do.
Despite this darker side, Arlo is capable of being calm, charismatic, and responsible when dealing with other people. His interest in chemistry demonstrates his analytical side, while his military background gave him confidence and decisiveness.
As mayor, Arlo keeps his darker tendencies mostly separate from his responsibilities. He is focused on keeping his city prosperous and maintaining his position within Calaveria.
