The wheat had grown well.
Henry brushed his fingers along the heads of grain, smiling quietly as he watched the wind create ripples in the golden sea.
"Another week or two..." he muttered. "This should feed us well."
A faint chime drifted from the grove beyond.
Henry's head snapped up.
The sound carried a perfect mechanical resonance, like a clockwork gear slipping its catch.
There shouldn't be anything by Koperdam out past the tree line, yet the sound repeated. A rapid, crystalline tinkle that made the hairs on his arms stand up.
Henry took a cautious step toward the tree line, listening.
Silence.
He reached for the notebook tucked beneath his arm and made a brief entry.
Southern grove.
Unidentified source of metallic resonance.
Requires investigation.
He closed the book with a quiet snap.
"...Curious."
