Tjongo was born when his people were still living outside of the Gaunasub Desert in Gaunais where he spent most of his youth in. This changed when he was around 15 years old due to the Somotho invading their land and driving them out. The Kuri//aes had to fend off the assaults of the Somotho. It was during this time where Tjongo started hunting animals for the tribe and doing other chores, for his courage and decisiveness he became a big figure in the kuri//aes army. However, they were unable to stand against the Somotho when a drought and subsequent famine ravaged Gaunais and killed many people.
