Introduction
Istrania, also known as the Eternal Kingdom of Istrania by the rest of the world, is a theocratic monarchy created long ago. However, none can say when. Its origin has vanished beneath countless generations, and what is left has become one big mess of history and myth, facts and miracles. Yet it is still accepted by the Istranians, as tradition itself has become the truth.
Istrania stands as a paradoxical nation of both tradition and progress; cathedrals cast their shadows over the sprawling industry fuelling a growing population and military. Railways lay side by side with ancient monasteries, whose history has been lost long ago, all in the same pursuit of creating a realm truly worthy of the Godking.

Political System
Istrania is a theocratic monarchy, where the holy sovereign is the Godking, who is still recovering from the Dark Time, and thereby the nation is ruled by a succession of regents on his behalf. Some are chosen by assemblies, others inherit it by blood, and some by trial of combat. All have sworn the same oath: not to rule for themselves, but to preserve the kingdom until the day the Godking returns. To seek the crown for oneself is considered the worst form of treason and blasphemy.
Istrania has by trials and errors in its long history turned into a hierarchical society, which favours discipline over individuality, loyalty over ambition, and duty over desire. All are expected to be totally devoted to the Godking, from humble farmers to the highest priest. All are merely small parts in the great plan of the Godking, and are divided among the five castes.
Social Hierarchy
Sogn (The Priests' Caste)
Sogn is the priesthood, the ones entrusted with preaching and preserving the light of the Godking until the day of his return. They alone may interpret matters relating to the faith and the Godking. The Sogn also serve as the scholars and scribes of Istrania. Every prophecy, treaty, and law must be preserved, for no knowledge can be lost before the return of the Godking.
Huscarls (The Warriors' Caste)
Huscarls are the sworn warriors of the kingdom. They defend the kingdom against any threat, may it be external or heretical. Every huscarl has sworn a holy oath to the Godking, to serve his name over any mortal matter. They are also the only ones who can openly bear weapons during times of peace.
Mesters (The Builders' Caste)
They are the kingdom's builders and engineers; every house, every church, every monument, every farm in Istrania has been made by those skilled hands. Their work is considered sacred by some, as each building strengthens the Godking's kingdom. The Mesters are organized into work groups that travel wherever construction is required, and rarely live in one place for long periods of time.
Købfolk (The Crafters' Caste)
Købfolk encompass different types of skilled trades in the urban area, from blacksmiths and woodcutters to crafters and merchants. They turn raw materials into useful tools and materials for the other castes to use. The wealth they earn from this work grants them some privileges in commerce, like being the only caste allowed to trade with foreigners. They are, however, watched by the Sogn with suspicion, as wealth can serve as temptation that can lead good men away from the Godking's light.
Bønder (The Farmers' Caste)
These are the common folk, the foundation of the kingdom. They go to the fields, fish the rivers, and work in the mines. They are the ones who gather the raw materials used by everyone, and even with their low social rank, they are still seen as essential for the kingdom.
