While the bustle of the Golden Quarter echoed through the palace windows, Semet lingered, taking in the scent of the fresh flowers Seras had brought into the throne room.

“I must thank him again. They truly brighten up the grievance hearings, and they smell so wonderful!” she remarked, her tone cheerful.

“My Kheta! My Kheta!”

A citizen burst through the main doors, gasping for air. He was a traveler, clearly worn thin by long days on the road, who collapsed to the floor, his destination finally reached. The young woman hurried to his side to check on his condition.

“He is dehydrated… Bring him some water, and something to eat as well!” she called out to the attendants. “Hold on, we are going to help you. What is it? Why such a rush, risking your own life? What is the emergency?”

Before he could answer, she placed a finger to his lips to stop him from speaking.

“Wait. Rest, and drink this water first,” she said, taking a flagon from one of the attendants.

She watched as he drank greedily, then took a deep, steadying breath. In a voice heavy with concern, he began his account:

“My Queen, I have just returned from Serrano. I was visiting the city when I witnessed something truly horrific…”

Serrano? she wondered. I visit there regularly, what could possibly be so terrible?

“I was gazing fondly at our beautiful city’s embassy, near their main square, when suddenly, as I moved further along the avenue, what did I see? A massive edifice dedicated to… the Mystic Hand! The very same group that promotes magic throughout the southern continents - and now, here in Hekamwt! To make matters even more appalling, this guild building is significantly more imposing than our own embassy!”

I had feared something far worse… yet, upon reflection, this might indeed prove to be even more dire news than it first appeared…

Semet took the panicked citizen’s head in her hands.

“Compose yourself. I have received your message. I shall now take care of this matter for you, and for all of Kedet. You need fear no longer. Thank you for coming.”

As Semet fastened his official travel cloak over her shoulders, a guard interrupted her, looking taken aback.

“Kheta-Semet, what are you doing? The grievance sessions are not yet over,” the guard remarked, gesturing toward the few citizens waiting in a single-file line.

“Advisor Sitem will attend to them. As for me, I am departing for Serrano immediately.”
