Istrania, also known as the Eternal Kingdom of Istrania to the rest of the world, is a theocratic monarchy founded long ago. Exactly when, however, none can say. Its origin have vanished beneath countless generations, and what is left has become one a tangled mixture of history and myth, facts and miracles. Yet this is accepted by the Istranians, as tradition itself has become the truth.

Istrania stands as a paradoxical nation of both tradition and progress; cathedrals cast their shadows over the sprawling industry fuelling a growing population and military, all in the same pursuit of creating a realm truly worthy of the Godking.

Political System

Istrania is a theocratic monarchy, whose rightful sovereign is the Godking, who are still recovery from the Dark Time. Until his return, the kingdom is governed by a succession of regents acting on his behalf. Some are chosen by assemblies of the five caste, others inherit the position by blood, and some claim it through trial by combat. All swear the same oath: not to rule for themselves, but to preserve the kingdom until the day the Godking returns. To claim the crown for oneselfis considered the gravest form of treason and blasphemy.

Through centuries of trial and error, Istrania has developed a hierarchical society that favours discipline over individuality, loyalty over ambition, and duty over desire. Devotion to the Godking is expected of all, from the humblest farmer to the highest priest. Within this order, society is divided into five castes, each entrusted with its own duties in service to the kingdom.

Social Hierarchy

Over the course of Istrania's long history, society has developed into a hierarchical system of five distinct castes, each entrusted with specific duties for the maintaining the kingdom. From the preservation of the Godking's light to the cultivation of fields, each caste serves a purpose in keeping the realm alive. Though they differ in status, privileges, and responsibilities, all are considered to ultimately serving the Godking and his kingdom. As a Istranian, you are born into your parent's castes, and for most people, they are unlikely to transcend into another caste due to how traditionalist Istranian society are.

Sogn (The Priests' Caste)

Sogn serve as the priesthood in the kingdom, unifted under the leadership of the Voice. They are the ones entrusted with preaching and preserving the light of the Godking until the day of his return. They alone may interpret matters concerning the Godking. The Sogn also serve as the scholars and scribes of Istrania. Every prophecy, treaty, and law must be preserved, for no knowledge maybe lost before the return of the Godking.

Huscarls (The Warriors' Caste)

Huscarls are the sworn warriors of the kingdom. They defend the kingdom against any threat, whether it may be external or heretical. Every huscarl has sworn a holy oath to the Godking, pledging to serve his name above any mortal matter. They are also the only ones who are permitted to openly bear arms during times of peace.

Mesters (The Builders' Caste)

They are the kingdom's builders and engineers; every house, every church, every monument, and farm in Istrania has been built by those skilled hands. Their work is considered sacred by some, as each building strengthens the Godking's kingdom. The Mesters are organized into work groups that travel wherever construction is required, and rarely remaining in one place for long.

Købfolk (The Crafters' Caste)

Købfolk encompass a range of skilled trades in the urban areas, from blacksmiths and woodcutters to artisans and merchants. They transform raw materials into useful tools and goods for the other castes to use. The wealth they earn through this work grants them certain privileges in commerce, including the right to be the only allowed to trade with foreigners. They are, however, regarded with suspicion by the Sogn, who see wealth as temptation that can lead ever the most faithful men away from the Godking's light.

Bønder (The Farmers' Caste)

These are the common folk, and the foundation of the kingdom. They work the fields, fish the rivers, and work in the mines. They are the ones, who gather the raw materials depend on by everyone else, and even with their low social rank, they are still seen as essential for the prosperity of the kingdom.

Culture

Istranian culture is shaped by the enduring influence of the Godking, whose shaped the traditions, and social norms. Though the Godking still remains absent, while he is recovering from the Dark Time, his eventual return continues to guide the lives and ambitions of his people. Religious devotion is therefore an integral part of how Istranians understands their place in the world and life.

Over the centuries, Istranian society has developed around a strict hierarchy of five castes, each entrusted with its own duties and responsibilities. This hierarchy are see as the best current way to safeguard the kingdom by prioritied duty to the realm and godking over personal ambitions.Despite its deep attachment to tradition and faith, Istrania is not a nation untouched by change. Industry, railways, and a growing presence in the greater world stand alongside religious institutions, ancient tradition and mistrust.

This attempt at coexistence of the ancient and the modern defines much of current Istrania.

Architecture

The architecture of Istrania can be best described as a monumental style, which are characterized by enormous and imposing cathedrals, highrise housing, big avenues and richly ornamented façades. In smaller form, this style, also known as Istranian imperial style, may use colours like quartz, birch/oak and sandstone or more reddish colours like brick, granite and terracotta for facades with elaborate ornament.
