Politics
National Government
Araxnae is led by the Matron Mother - the most prominent member of the ruling Great House. The Matron Mother's word is law, though even she must take care not to abuse her power beyond her means. Araxnae's politics are a tangled mass of power dynamics, placation, and scheming. Making too many enemies makes for a short reign, as does being amiable to all. Weakness is reviled, and strength must be proven with each endeavor. As such, to die of old age is considered the pinnacle of achievement - for there is always someone unhappy with their own station, and always some scheme, or many, moving invisible pieces along and shadowed board.
Regional Government
Xymerria has four main districts, each ruled by a Great Matron - leaders of the four Great Houses aside from the ruling Great House. These Great Matrons act primarily as governors of their districts. Its other cities are ruled by Matrons, the most prominent members of the Lesser Houses, in much the same way. This form of regional, federated autocracy ensures that each of the Great and Lesser Houses maintains a powerbase from which to work from, and the Petty Houses - those houses with little to no political power - have a clear path to their own ascension.
Culture
Language
The official language of Araxnae is Skyxtheriss, though it is forbidden to speak or write it in any correspondence with other nations or outsiders. In these external communications, they prefer to use common.
Religion
Araxnae is deeply steeped the Deep Elven worship of Laelanis, known as Yssrx, who they claim founded Araxnae and created their people. The entire structure of Araxnae's government is lifted directly from the recorded First Rule - a time when Laelanis herself directly controlled Araxnae before turning her attention elsewhere in the cosmos.
