Ilivnolu could scarcely believe what she had just heard. Yet in spite of her shock, she could show nothing as she took it in. Any sign of uncertainty was an opening she could scant afford. Not here, of all places. Not around *them*. A coy grin spread across her face like a mask. *Yes, she could use this...* "Are you so surprised?" She had seen the flicker of bewilderment in the newer Matrons. She suspected she'd have new names to pretend to forget in a year. Subtle as it may be, even the slightest cut can introduce a toxin most unpleasant. In this game, there is no room for those who can measure to their peers and be found wanting. By pressing this opportunity, she may as well be signing a handful of death warrants.

"The world shook, and we find ourselves beyond The Great Divide - you did not think that more awaited beyond?" Ilivnolu turned per grin into a practiced frown, measured to show superiority in even the most simple of expressions. "All that this means is there is all the more for us to take. Laelanis has gifted us with a great bounty indeed. This is to be our great conquest." By now, her attention had shifted to the other Matrons. Watching their expressions, calculating their inner workings. Invoking Laelanis' name was a risk, but it would at least buy some time before their plots could become action. Yssae would not take kindly to any Matron that would so flagrantly disregard such an auspicious portent, and without the backing of Yssae, her usurper would never sit long on her throne.

"This searing light... This... cavern without a cover. We must bring it to heel. Matron Viarres, Matron Xinala, Matron Zinoa. You three will put aside your petty squabbles and secure a forward outpost in the name of Laelanis." Yes. Play them against each other. These three will get the job done, of course, but old rivalries never truly die. With their proverbial knives pointed at each other, Ilivnolu could begin to tighten her grip.
