An Uneasy Fortune

Rullen wiped the moisture from his spectacles. The rain had followed him from the capital, but at last he had arrived. This windstead, worn down as it was, was to be his home. The provincarch had called him lucky -- to have acquired such a tract within Mühn Proper -- but Rullen could only feel the weight and obligations of the assignment. Few from beyond Mühn's borders could have been entrusted here, and much depended upon him.
In the morning, once the rain had passed, he hiked to the top of the glade's highest outcropping. The air was thick with moisture, but the day was bringing in a cool coastal breeze. Below him, the windstead slowly stirred. Rullen watched the mill begin to turn, skimming the water's surface with each rotation.
It was an old machine, older than the road that led to it, and for all its wear it still knew its work. Rullen wondered if he would prove as durable.
