Jakub was born into the working class, with his father working in a quarry and his mother an artisan. There wasn't much food to share, but they made it by. They lived in the temporary settlement camps of Gloracja. At a young age, Jakub learned that being useful was one of the most important things to his family, so he helped out wherever he could. Due to his young age, there wasn't much work he could do, but he tried nonetheless.
Jakub's father eventually died in a landslide while working in the quarry. Some time later, his mother succumbed to an illness, leaving Jakub orphaned at the age of eight. With no family left to care for him, he ended up on the streets, where he had to learn to survive on his own.
