Official Statement Regarding The Gateway and Willem Voss, By Order of the Directorate
Following recent discussions with the government of Kheta-Kedet surrounding The Gateway, the Directorate of the Technate of Koperdam has decided to withdraw the claims from the proposed location of The Gateway.
Koperdam has consistently maintained that its intention is to establish reliable commercial and transportation connections rather than impose its authority upon foreign nations. While the Directorate continues to believe that the original location would have provided considerable strategic and commercial value, we recognise that infrastructure cannot be built upon territory where its presence is not accepted.
We therefore accept the proposal to relocate the Gateway to a location where its establishment can proceed with the consent of the sovereign authority concerned.
The Directorate wishes to specifically acknowledge Kheta-Kedet for choosing to engage in discussion rather than allowing the disagreement to escalate further. Kheta-Kedet has demonstrated that disagreement does not require hostility, and that sovereignty can be defended without immediately closing the door to negotiation. We hope the other nations involved will eventually recognise the value of the same approach.
This decision, however, does not constitute an abandonment of Koperdam's railway ambitions.
The Technate remains committed to the expansion of its railway network and to establishing connections with nations willing to participate in them. Where railway infrastructure crosses into the territory of another nation, Koperdam will seek appropriate agreements with the relevant authorities before construction begins — like it has done beforehand with the works of Chief Artificer Percival van der Berg.
Regarding the Tribunal of Willem Voss
The Directorate has also considered the concerns raised regarding the sentence imposed upon former Senior Editorial Officer Willem Voss.
The Tribunal's original sentence was intended to reflect the extraordinary consequences of Voss's actions. His publication was issued through an official government institution and contributed directly to a serious diplomatic crisis which placed the safety of Koperdammer citizens and foreign relations at considerable risk.
However, the Directorate recognises that Voss's actions, while reckless and gravely irresponsible, were not undertaken with the intention of causing war or deliberately endangering innocent lives.
Following further review, the Directorate has therefore ordered that his sentence be reduced from twenty years to twelve years imprisonment, subject to judicial review and potential rehabilitation during his sentence.
Voss will remain permanently barred from government service and from holding positions of authority within the Technate's diplomatic and information institutions. The Directorate considers this punishment severe, but proportionate.
Koperdam does not believe that justice should exist solely to punish. It must also provide an opportunity for those who have failed the state to understand their failures, demonstrate reform, and eventually return to society.
The Future
The Technate of Koperdam has no desire for war.
We will continue to build railways, and we will continue to seek trade. We will continue to pursue technological progress.
But we will do so through agreements with those who are willing to build alongside us.
